Chapter 10
Christine’s hands shook as she popped a damp towel into the microwave. The haircut had just about wrecked her, and now she was going to shave him with a straight razor? She was going to need a stiff drink after this; that is, if she managed to not send him to the emergency room with a sliced jugular or collapse from nerves herself.
When the timer beeped, she took the towel from the microwave and carefully wrapped it around Cash’s handsome face. After the towel had cooled a bit, she removed it and applied some pre-shave cream to his face. They both inhaled the cool scent simultaneously, but whereas it seemed to relax Cash, the lemon scent of the cream threatened to overwhelm Christine with memories.
“I remember the first time I shaved you. I was scared out of my mind, but you kept reassuring me that I knew what I was doing.” Christine rotated a wet shaving brush over the surface of a tin of shaving cream.
“Well, I figured since you’d shaved your old man with a straight razor for years and resisted cutting his throat, I was pretty safe, considering you kind of liked me.”
Christine snorted and, using a circular motion, began to apply the shaving cream to his face. Cash closed his eyes and visibly relaxed in the chair. Christine took a deep breath, opened the straight razor, and started drawing the sharp blade over his skin.
She took her time, using the shave to re-memorize the planes of Cash’s handsome face. God, she’d missed him. Right after she’d made him leave, she’d convinced herself she only missed the idea of him. After all, the theoretical doting husband who lived and breathed for his wife and only his wife was a completely different beast than an active duty Marine husband who was either distracted by waiting to be deployed or decompressing and reacclimating upon returning.
But she was lying to herself. She missed him, period. And it wasn’t like she made coming home any easier on him. Just like she never really knew which Cash would walk through the door after a deployment, he didn’t know exactly whom he was coming home to. They’d known each other for a long time before Cash decided to enlist. They’d seen each other every day, had been able to pick up the phone or physically go to the other for literally years, and suddenly, neither of them had the support system they’d become accustomed to. They both floundered, and continued to do so. Sure, they’d regained their balance, returned to their new normalcy for a while, but then life had a way to disrupting even the most careful plans.
With a deep sigh, she finished shaving the back of his neck and then began to work some aftershave cream on the areas she’d shaved. She tilted his head up to get a better view of his handsome face, only to find his eyes boring into hers, his gaze so intense it was like a physical blow.
